Chess at Three is an education company that teaches children as young as 3 through storytelling, turning each chess piece into a character with a memorable backstory. Our engaging lessons make chess fun, intuitive, and easy to learn—even for complete beginners.
We replace rote memorization with story-driven lessons that spark curiosity, creativity, and lasting understanding—making learning fun and sticky.
We specialize in ages 3–8, but we’ve taught hundreds of curious toddlers ready to explore chess—even if they’ve never seen a board before.
Storytelling
We use storytelling to create powerful “aha!” moments—when kids naturally understand a new concept. Each piece becomes a character with a purpose, making learning fun, memorable, and emotionally engaging.
Gameplay
We introduce one piece at a time, gradually increasing complexity as kids build confidence. This scaffolded approach moves students from learning how each piece moves to mastering strategy—all through mini-games, puzzles, and full over-the-board play.
Life Skills
Beyond chess, our lessons build focus, perseverance, sportsmanship, and critical thinking. We adapt every lesson to the child’s pace and personality, so every student feels supported, seen, and excited to learn.
Above all, fun is at the heart of everything we do. When a child is having fun, they’re naturally motivated to learn. Our tutors are creative, playful, and deeply engaged—meeting every child where they are to spark a lifelong love of learning.
Yes! By around lesson 10, many kids can set up the board and play a full game of our modified version, “Capture the King.” Every child learns at their own pace—and that’s okay. Our curriculum meets them where they are and builds from there, introducing strategy, tactics, and tournament-style play in a way that keeps learning joyful.
No problem! If your child already plays, we’ll assess what they know and tailor lessons to their level. Our tutors keep students challenged and excited, no matter where they are in their chess journey.
Yes! We offer private and small group lessons at home, online, and in our clubs.
Absolutely. Our tutors are trained educators, actors, and storytellers—all carefully vetted, background-checked, and certified in our one-of-a-kind curriculum.
We do our best to match families with tutors who fit their needs, and we can accommodate requests when possible. If something’s not clicking, we’ll find someone new.
Tutors provide regular updates and can offer more detailed progress reports upon request. As students advance, they explore deeper strategy, puzzles, mini-games, and tournament-style play.
Not with our approach! Kids don’t need any experience to start. We introduce concepts gradually through stories and games that make chess feel intuitive.
That’s totally fine! Our lessons use movement and interaction to keep even the squirmiest learners engaged.
Our curriculum is 100% original—built around stories and refined over 15+ years of teaching kids. We’re always improving and adding more, so there’s always something new for your child to explore.
Primarily in English, but we may be able to accommodate special requests—just ask! Email support@chessat3.com
Anywhere you’re comfortable—living room, dining room, kitchen table. We ask that lessons happen outside of bedrooms so kids can stay focused in a consistent learning space.
Lessons are 45–60 minutes, depending on your child’s age, attention span, and pace. Your tutor will tailor each session to their needs and aim to end on a high note so learning always feels rewarding.
